The Put-in-Bay Information What You Need To Know About Visiting the Island
Put-in-Bay is known as the “Key West Of The North” but unlike Key West, we are a true island with no attached roadways. There are three ways to get to South Bass Island home to the Village of Put-in-Bay. The most popular way to arrive is by one of the two Put-in-Bay Ferry Boats which offer service to the island. The Jet Express departs from Port Clinton Ohio. It is the principal ferry for passengers arriving right in the downtown Put-in-Bay area. The Miller Ferry transports vehicles to the island as well as passengers and arrives on the back side of the island. A Taxi or Buss for a fee can bring you into town from the ferry port. Arriving by private boat is another popular option and Put-in-Bay has several boat docks that are available to rent daily or overnight. Rafting is required at the discretion of the Dockmaster. Fee’s vary and are charged by the foot. Weekends are especially popular. Early arrival is suggested. The Put-in-Bay Airport offers private pilots a paved well maintained runway and is also home to Griffing Flying Service that offers private flights to and from the island from their home base in Port Clinton. The short 8-minute flight is made in 4-6 & 12 passenger planes.
Getting Around On Put-in-Bay
Once on the island, you will quickly see the favored mode of transportation is Put-in-Bay Golf Carts Driven under the same rules as cars, golf carts seat 2-4-6 & 8 people depending on the size rented. Delaware Golf Carts is the island largest rental facility offering the newest late model golf carts available to rent hourly, daily, or overnight. Golf Cart Reservations are recommended and may be made here: Taxi Service is available and there are busses that transport from the downtown area to the other side of the island and its ferry landing.
Put-in-Bay Information on Hotels, Resorts & Home Rentals
Put-in-Bay offers a wide variety of hotels & resorts each having their own amenities and room types. The Edgewater Hotel is located on the main strip across from the park and waterfront and offers the closest experience to the downtown area. The Edgewater Hotel features rooms that sleep up to 4 adults and family and group suites that sleep up to 6 people.
The Put-in-Bay Resort is the islands largest, newest and most popular hotel. The resort is home to the award-winning Blue Marlin Bar & Grill which serves poolside or in the pool at the highly popular swim up bar. The Resort has the widest variety of room types accommodating from 2 to 12 people. Located just one block from the main strip, the resort offers amenities such as a fitness center, continental breakfast (excluding Saturday) and a 40 person Jacuzzi attached to the heated pool.
The Bay Lodging Resort is located in a quiet residential neighborhood. Guests will enjoy the heated indoor-outdoor pool, the only one of its type on the island. Continental Breakfast is included daily (excluding Saturday) Golf Cart Rentals are located on site. The resort has rooms that sleep from 2 to 10 people including well appointed 2 bedroom apartment style rooms with a full kitchen.
Put-in-Bay Rental Homes are popular with groups and families and the ONLY rental homes located in the downtown area are the Put-in-Bay 8 person villa homes and the 12 person villa homes. Put-in-Bay offers one of the widest varieties of attractions and things to do in such a small condensed area. History buffs will have no shortage of options with the famous Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial, the third tallest Doric Column in the world. The elevator ride to the top produces a breathtaking view of the skylines of Detroit, Toledo and occasionally Cleveland. The Lake Erie Islands Historical Society maintains a museum which has preserved island history and offers informative tours. Nature & walking trails are abundant on the island as are ideal locations for a bike ride. The island is home to the Ohio State University Stone Labs and a fish hatchery where kids can catch fish off the docks while learning about Lake Erie. Put-in-Bay offers a wide variety of dining options from carrying out to resort casual. Each of the Put-in-Bay Restaurants is known for at least one signature item. No visit to Put-in-Bay would be complete without a stop at the Boardwalk Restaurant known for their Lobster Bisque. The complex features several dining options including the Upper Deck with a stunning view of the Put-in-Bay Harbor. Mossbacks, just across the street offers fresh Lake Erie Perch & Walleye in a casual setting.
